How to Fix Hot Tub Air Lock?

You’re ready to take a dip in the hot tub. However, as soon as you turn on the jets, the water disappears. This is usually the result of an air locked hot tub. You may also notice an error code on the display. This is a dead giveaway that your hot tub is locked.

What is Hot Tub Air Lock?

This occurs when the air gets trapped in the plumbing and the circulation pump is not able to prime. This causes the water to go through the pipes and the jets to work properly.

It’s easy to get trapped in the lines of a hot tub after it’s drained. Fortunately, this can be quickly fixed using a simple procedure.

How to Fix Hot Tub Air Lock

There are a few simple steps that can help remove air lock in a hot tub or spa. Before starting, make sure the heater is turned off. Also, make sure the temperature setting is set down.

Some newer hot tub pumps and hot tubs have a designated bleeder valve. This feature allows for easy and quick air lock elimination.

The first step is to remove the air from the plumbing through the jets. This method works by turning the jets on high for a few seconds and then off again.

If the jets are still active, leave them on for a couple of seconds to allow the bubbles to form before returning them to their original function. This method works if you see bubbles after each on/off cycle. However, if they do not appear after three cycles, try another method.

This method involves removing air from the pump by carefully removing the cabinet panels. You will need a screwdriver and a set of channel lock pliers.

Use the panel that's located underneath the spa cabinet to access the pump. Loosen the union nut between the spa's plumbing and the motor.

Once the air has gotten out, the water will start to sputter out. This will cause the jets to re-tighten the union. If this still happens, call a professional to troubleshoot the issue.

Preventing Hot Tub Air Lock

One of the easiest ways to avoid having a hot tub air lock is to empty the jets as they are being refilled. Instead of dropping the hose into the tub, tie the end of the hose to the filter well and leave the rest open.
