How To Set up a Pool Valve Actuator

In this guide we'll show how to install a Goldline [Hayward] GVA-24 Valve Actuator on top of a Jandy Neverlube Diverter Valve to automate the operation of this valve. It can be used singly or in pairs to automatically divert water to pool/spa operations, solar heating, cleaning operation, water features or a variety of other pool features. This valve actuator is compatible with all major manufacturer's valves and pool automation system. 

1. REVIEW VALVE OPERATION -On a typical diverter valve, there are three ports, the center port, and two end ports. On the suction side of the pump, water enters from either or both end ports and exits through the center port. The valve handle can be turned 180°, as shown to select water from either end or both ends. Water cannot be shut off to the center port. On the discharge side of the pump, the flow is reversed. Water would enter from the center port and exit through either end or both ends. As with the suction side, water cannot be shut off on the center port.

2. MOUNTING SELECTION - The Goldline/Hayward GVA-24 Valve Actuator can be mounted on top of a valve in four different positions. This guide will show you how to mount it in the most common, standard position as shown in this picture. 3. CAM ADJUSTIMENT - There are two cams located on the actuator shaft that are used to set the stop points. The upper cam sets the clockwise rotation stop point and the lower cam sets the counter-clockwise rotation point. If the cams are factory set at 12 o'clock for the Standard position, they will not have to be adjusted for this installation. 4. TURN POWER OFF - Turn off the power to the pump.

5. REMOVE VALVE LOCKING NUT - Unscrew the valve locking nut off the top of the valve.

6. REMOVE VALVE HANDLE - Lift off the valve handle.

7. REMOVE 4 SCREWS FROM VALVE - Remove 4 of the 8 screws that secure the top valve assembly to the valve body. The picture shows which screws to remove.

8. ALIGN ACTUATOR SHAFT WITH VALVE DIVERTER SHAFT - Look at the tabs in the hole on the bottom of the actuator. Align the smallest tab in the actuator hole with the smallest slot on the valve shaft..

9. SLIDE ON ACTUATOR - Turn the actuator over and with it aligned to the shaft, slide the actuator onto the shaft of the valve.

10. ROTATE ACTUATOR - With the actuator on the shaft, rotate the actuator until the holes on the actuator line up with the four screw holes on the valve

11. SECURE ACTUATOR TO VALVE - Using the four screws that came with the actuator, secure the actuator to the top of the valve. Do not over tighten.

12. PLACE VALVE HANDLE ON ACUTATOR SHAFT - Align the handle tabs with the slots in the actuator shaft and slide the handle onto the shaft.

13. PLACE LOCKING KNOB ON SHAFT - Screw the locking knob on top of the handle.

14. TURN ACTUATOR ON - Locate the power switch on the backside of the actuator. It has three postions: ON1, OFF AND ON2. If the switch is set on OFF, move the switch to ON1 or ON2.

15. CONNECT CONTROL CORD - Plug the end of the control cord attached to the actuator to a control board like a Jandy Aqualink RS Control System. This system allows you to program and automatically control this valve  from a touch pad in your house.
