The Goldline/Hayward GVA-24 Valve Actuator can be mounted on top of a 3-way valve in four different positions relative to the 3 ports of the valve. If the actuator is mounted in the standard, most common, position, the actuator cams do not have to be changed. If the actuator is mounted in any of the other three positions, the cams of the actuator will have to be reset. This guide identifies the location of the cams and shows how to adjust them. It also shows you how to sync this actuator with other actuators you may be installing.
1. STANDARD MOUNTING A - This picture shows how a Goldline Valve Actuator would be mounted in the most common, standard position. The body of the actuator would lie over the center port and the water would flow into the center port and out the end ports. The next picture shows a drawing of all four mounting positions.
2. FOUR MOUNTING OPTIONS - The Goldline Valve Actuator can be mounted on top of most diverter valve products in any of the four mounting options shown here. Depending on how the water flows into and from the three ports, cams within the actuator will generally have to be changed in accordance with the Cam Setting Table shown next.
3. CAM SETTING TABLE - This table is used to determine the cam settings for any of the four actuator mountings. As you can see the cam settings are based on both the actuator mounting and the direction of water flow. For example, for Mounting A, if the water enters port 2 (the center port and flows out ports 2 and 3 (the end ports) both the lower cam and the upper cam will be set 12 o'clock. This is the common, standard setting used in most installations. In another example for Mounting A, if the water enters port 3 and exits ports 1 and 2, you would have to set the lower cam at 3 o'clock and the upper cam at 6 o'clock. Note: all clock settings are referenced from the small slot on the shaft. See the picture in the next step. One other note. This table shows the setting for valves used to DISCHARGE water (after the pump). For valves on the suction side of the pump (before the pump), the table is the same except the headings in columns 2 and 4 would be switched. Column 2 would read "PORT WHERE WATER EXITS", and Column 4 would read "PORT WHERE WATER ENTERS".
4. CAM CLOCK REFERENCES - All clock references in the table above are made relative to the small slot in the actuator shaft which is always 12 o'clock.

6. SETTING CAMS - The balance of this guide provides a couple of actual examples for setting the cams: two for Mounting A - including the Standard position; and two for Mounting B.
7. TURN POWER OFF - Turn off the power to the pump.
8. TURN OFF ACTUATOR - Turn off the power to the actuator if it is connected to the control panel. The acutator switch is on the underside of the actuator.
9. SET UP FOR MOUNT A - This is the set up position for Mount A as shown in the figure above.
10. REMOVE LOCKING KNOB - Unscrew the valve locking knob off the top off the actuator.
11. REMOVE VALVE HANDLE - Lift off the valve handle. Note the location of the tabs and slots on the handle and shaft. This is how they will line up when you put the handle back on.
12. REMOVE COVER SCREWS - Remove the 4 screws that secure the actuator cover.
13. REMOVE COVER - Lift the cover off the top of the actuator.
14. CHECK O-RING - The shaft O-ring should be set into the shaft hole of the cover. If it came on to the shaft, take it off the shaft and replace it into the hole.
15. REMOVE SHAFT COLLAR - There is a shaft collar that holds the cams in place. Slide this collar up off the shaft. Note that the thinner part of the collar is up.
16. REMOVE CAMS - There are two cams at the base of the shaft: a lower cam and an upper cam. Slide the cams up off the shaft.
17. REVIEW WATER FLOW FOR OPTION A2 (STANDARD) DISCHARGE - Note the flow of the water through the valve. For this option the water must flow into the center port and out either or both of the end ports. The center port will always be open. Either of the end ports can be shut off with the valve. This is the configuration for a discharge valve after the pump. An example of this use is water flowing from the filter to the pool or the spa or both.
18. REVIEW WATER FLOW FOR OPTION A2 (STANDARD) SUCTION - To configure this actuator/valve for an A2 setting on the suction side of the pump, the water flow will be reversed. Water will come from either or both ends and will exit out the center port. An example of this use is water coming from the pool drain or the skimmer or both, and exiting to the pump. In either setup, discharge or suction, the cam setup will be A2. The common criteria for both setups is that the A2 the center port is always open regardless of which way the water flows in it. Only the end ports can be closed off.
19. SET CAMS FOR OPTION A2 (STANDARD) - According to the cam setting table, for Mount A option 2, both cams should be set at the 12 o'clock position as shown.
20. REVIEW WATER FLOW FOR OPTION A1 - This option assumes that the actuator is still installed in Mount A position but the water flow through the valve has changed. For discharge water is flowing into port 1 and flowing out either port 2 or port 3 or both. Port 1 will always be open.
21. SET CAMS FOR OPTION A1 - According to the cam setting table, for Mount A option 1, the lower cam is set at 6 o'clock and the upper cam is set at 9 o-clock as shown in the picture.
22. VIEW FOR MOUNTING B - For our second set of examples, we will install the actuator in Mount B position as shown. The body of the actuator is lined up with the pipe coming into port 1.
23. REVIEW WATER FLOW FOR OPTION B1 - For a B1 setup up (discharge), the water will flow into port 1 and be discharged into port 2 or port 3 or both.
24. SET CAMS FOR B1 - According to the cam setting table, for Mount B option 1, the lower cam is set at 9 o'clock and the upper cam is set at 12 o-clock as shown in the picture. Remember 12 o-clock is positioned at the small slot of the shaft.
25. REVIEW WATER FLOW FOR OPTION B2 - For a B2 setup up (discharge), the water will flow into port 2 and be discharged into port 1 or port 3 or both. You will note that the water flow is the same as for A2. The cams have to set differently because the actuator as mounted was rotated 90° from the Mount A position. The control of water flow through the valve is the same for both A2 and B2 (and C2 and D2 for that matter).
26. SET CAMS FOR B2 - According to the cam setting table, for Mount B option 2, both cams should be set at the 3 o'clock position as shown.
27. REPLACE SHAFT COLLAR - After you have set the cams in their correct position per the cam setting table, start closing up the actuator by sliding the shaft collar onto the shaft over the cams - thin wall up.
28. REPLACE AND SECURE COVER - Replace the actuator cover and secure it with the 4 screws.
29. REPLACE HANDLE - Align the handle tabs with the slots in the actuator shaft and slide the handle onto the shaft.
30. REPLACE LOCKING KNOB - Screw the locking knob on top of the handle.
31. TURN ACTUATOR ON - Locate the power switch on the backside of the actuator. It has three positions: ON1, OFF AND ON2. If the switch is set on OFF, move the switch to ON1 or ON2.
32. CHECK SYNC - If you have installed multiple actuators and this one is rotating incorrectly in relation to another, flip the actuator toggle switch from ON1 to ON2 or ON2 to ON1 depending on its current setting.
