Pool Shape & Size
Above ground pool liners come in various shapes and sizes to fit over 30 standard sizes. Most of the time, vinyl liner is the easiest way to find the right size for your pool.
Above ground liners have three different depths: 48”, 53”, and 54”. The overall depth measurement for these types of liners is taken from the flat floor to the wall.
The depth measurement is very important when it comes to purchasing a liner. It can be adjusted to fit the exact size of the liner. However, it cannot be adjusted to alter its depth.
Types of Pool Liners
There are three types of pool liners that are available in the market. They are labeled by the way they're attached to the pool's top surface.
1. Overlap Pool Liner
Overlap pool liner is a type of pool liner that folds over the wall and is held in place using plastic u-channel pieces known as Coping Strips.
2. Beaded Pool Liner
A beaded pool liner has a top edge that's thick enough to lock into a track or a groove on the pool's wall. It's also commonly used to mimic the look of an an inground pool.
3. Unibead Pool Liner
Unibead pool liners have a curved edge that hangs on the wall. They're the easiest type of liner to replace. Also, they can be printed with tile borders.
Additional Information on Liner Types
All of the previously mentioned pool liner types are only used for above ground pools. There is also a fourth type called an expandable liner, which are used on Doughboy pools.
If your pool has an above ground rectangular design, then you will need to buy a specific liner for your pool. For older designs, such as those made by Esther Williams and Johnny Weistuller, a larger bead liner is recommended.
If you’re not sure what type of pool liner you have, look under the rail. This will help determine if you need an overlap or beaded liner.
Pool Liner Colors and Patterns
With the addition of decorative patterns and darker colors, pool liners now have a wider variety of colors and patterns.
After choosing the right pool liner, it's time to enjoy the fun part. There are many factors to consider when choosing a pool liner.
Patterned pool liner panels are more durable and can hide various features such as cracks and dirt, while also imparting a rich color and improving the water's quality.
Ideally, maintain a pH level of less than 2.5 ppm. It's also important to keep the water balance at a minimum.
Pool Liner Thickness
The standard thickness of a pool liner is 20 mil. This means that it measures 0.508 mm thick. Don't confuse gauge with the thickness of pool liner.
Aside from the standard 20 mil liner, there are also 25 mil options. This type of liner is more durable and is ideal for areas with limited space.
When choosing a pool liner, make sure to ask for the phrase 100% virgin vinyl as this refers to the material that's made without any recycled vinyl. This means that it's made with virgin resin.
Warranty
A vinyl pool liner typically has a 1-year full replacement warranty. This is typically not covered by a seam separation, which is typically not covered by a limited pool liner. A pool liner's warranty only covers the defects in materials and workmanship.
