How a Hayward Sand Multiport Valve Differs from a DE Multiport Valve

This guide shows you the difference between a Hayward Sand Multiport Valve and a DE Multiport Valve. At first glance a Hayward DE Multiport Valve (MPV) looks the same as a Hayward Sand MPV and the user might assume they are interchangeable. In general , that is not true. A Hayward DE MPV functions differently from a Hayward Sand MPV. Note: Valve operations differ by manufacturer. Pentair MPVs, for example, are interchangeable between DE and Sand Filters.

1. DE MPV WATER FLOW - This is a Hayward SP-740DE Vari-Flow Filter Control Multiport Valve. It's operation is typical of most MPVs that are mounted on the side of a DE filter tank. During normal filter operation, water will flow into the Filter Tank through the bottom Filter port, as shown, and out of the Filter Tank through the top Filter port.

2. SAND MPV WATER FLOW - This is a Hayward P0715X62 Vari-Flow Filter Control Multiport Valve. It's operation is typical of most MPVs that are mounted on the side of a SAND filter tank. During normal filter operation, water flow is opposite that of a DE MPV and Filter. Water will flow into the Filter Tank through the top Filter port as shown, and out of the Filter Tank through the bottom Filter port.
